The mark as read button converts forum folder-icons from indicating there are NEW unread posts in a board, to the icon indicating all messages have been read.
This feature allows you to convert folder notification icons without actually having to visit each new forum post. This feature can be useful in busy forums where you don't have the time or the desire to review each new post made by forum members.
On the main page of the forum, new discussion posts will be indicated by the NEW folder icon to the left of individual board names. The NEW folder will also be seen to the left of sub-boards when there are new posts. For individual boards, the new-post icon will appear just to the left of the thread name under the subject column.
The mark as read button can be found in two areas on the forum:
Main page "mark as read": On the main page of the discussion forum, you'll find the mark as read button at the bottom-right, in the footer bar of the board listings. Clicking this button will convert ALL posts made on the forum that are currently marked as NEW to already-read status. When the page reloads, topics will no longer display as NEW.
Thread listing page "mark as read": When viewing a specific board, you'll find the mark as read button both at the top-right and bottom-right corners of thread listings. When clicked, all new posts in just the board you're viewing will convert from NEW to already-read status. Using the mark as read command in a specific board will not affect the status of posts in other boards on the forum.
