Change URL

At any time you may change your forum's URL. A URL change does not affect the forum's content or members. There is no limit on how many times you may change your forum's URL, however there is a one-time nominal fee for each change.

Note

You may change your forum title without changing your forum URL. (See Forum Title)

You may also add a custom domain name to your forum as an alternative to using the forum's URL as the default URL. (See Domains)

Changing Your Forum's URL

1. Enter the desired forum name in the New ProBoards URL field.
2. Use the dropdown selector to choose the desired domain.
3. Click the Continue To Checkout button.

New URL fields

If the desired URL is available you will be taken to the purchase screen to review and complete the transaction.

If the desired URL is already in use you will receive an error message stating that the forum URL is not available in which case you will need to choose a different URL.

tip

If your chosen URL is unavailable you may wish to try changing the selected domain as your desired URL may be available using a different domain.

After the Change

Members
An automatic redirect from your old URL to your new URL will be active for two weeks. However you should notify members of the change so they will know the new URL after the redirect ceases. Remind members to update their browser bookmark.

Links
Remember to update links you have on other websites that point to your forum.

Absolute (non-relative) forum links need to be updated.

Links: Absolute vs Relative
Links on a forum that point back to a location on the same forum can be absolute or relative. Either link type loads the same page.

An absolute link provides the complete location information of your forum. Absolute links break if the forum URL changes.

A relative link only contains the location following your forum's domain. Relative links do not break if the forum URL changes.

What Happens When a URL is Changed

Content and Members
Your exiting forum structure, installed themes and plugins, threads, posts, members, and forum settings remain intact and unaffected by the change. Nothing regarding the forum changes except the URL.

Custom Domains
If you use a custom domain with your forum, changing the URL will not change the custom domain name. Change URL does not affect the linking and your custom domain will seamlessly work with the new URL.

Redirect to New URL
For two weeks after your URL change we will automatically redirect visitors from your forum's old URL to the new one.

NOTE

If for some reason you choose to opt out of having visitors redirected, please make a request on the ProBoards Support Board prior to changing the URL and a ProBoards Admin will assist you.

The Old URL
After the automatic two-week redirect time period, ProBoards, at its sole discretion, may make your old forum URL available for registration.
